grief is a river. the tarot is the ferryman.

let's meet at the mouth of the river.

we are all grieving these days.

but perhaps you don't think of the heaviness you're experiencing as grief. we often only identify grief as something people experience after a death or a major loss, but grief can take many forms, and express itself in many ways. sometimes grief looks more like anger, anxiety, frustration, sorrow, depression, or detachment. yet grief is often the root of these intense emotions, the threads that connect our daily lived experiences and reactions.

this world is terribly difficult, heavy, challenging. it is changing, and we are changing along with it. grief is part of that transformation, a deeply human reaction to shifts and endings that can easily get lost in all of the pain and confusion.

when we deny that we are grieving, it can make it really difficult to hold space for that grief, and to treat ourselves with the care and compassion that we truly need.

so how do we start paying attention to our grief? what do we do when our grief feels too heavy to contemplate, to even look at clearly? in a world that demands so much from us, how do we make time to honor our grief, and everything that comes with it?

how does this work?

  • suggested exercises for engaging with grief in a gentle, accessible way

styx & stones is designed to encourage your personal reflections and serve as a very gentle starting place for learning how to listen to your grief. you do not need to be an experienced tarot reader to participate, but i do recommend this container for people who have a basic understanding of the structure of the tarot deck, and who have a foundational relationship with their cards.

all you need to participate is a tarot deck, a place to record your thoughts, and a willingness to explore your own interiority.

please note that while i have training in grief facilitation work and approach tarot through a grief-and-trauma-informed lens, i am not a licensed therapist, counselor, or social worker, and am not equipped to offer one-on-one support. participants will be encouraged to share their experience with people in their life who can offer them more individual support, and to build a care plan in case of activations.

your grief needs you to listen.

i can't make your grief magically go away, and i don't want to.

so many treat grief like something to power through, rather than something that requires our care and attention. your grief is not a problem to be solved — it's a revelation to be respected.

your grief desperately needs space to breathe, to share, to exist. your grief needs your care and your tenderness, your attention and your curiosity, your respect and your courage. your grief is a sacred part of your humanity, a reflection of what you care about and what you value. and when you learn how to listen to it, you can better understand who you have become and who you are becoming.

the tarot, with its many stories and cycles and endings and beginnings, offers us a powerful, potent entry point into grief work. these cards and archetypes can help us find the language we need to articulate what our grief is, how it feels, where it lives, and what it needs. the tarot can be a companion, a guide, a ferryman in navigating the deep waters of grief.

you can do this work alone — but it's easier to do it together, with simple structures and gentle prompts. and if you'd like to have companions for the journey, styx & stones is for you.
